Marlene Ross

"Behind the Mask"

Marlene Ross raised in Merrickville Ontario, currently residing in Brockville, began her career as a Cartoonist and serious Portrait Artist.

For the past (21) years, Marlene has been the Premier Artist for goalies in the NHL , International and Olympic competition, NCAA and CIAU Leagues, Major Motion Pictures and for Amateur men, women and children in Minor Hockey around the world.

She has designed and painted original pieces of “ Mask Art” for over 50 goalies alone in the NHL including the likes of Martin Brodeur, Roberto Luongo, J.S. Giguere, Marc-Andre Fleury, Curtis Joseph, Mathieu Garon, Jocelyn Thibault, Marc Denis, Cristobal Huet, David Aebischer, Alex Auld, Jeff Hackett, Grant Fuhr, Ron Hextall, etc... just to name a few.

Marlene also seen as a “Pioneer” for women in Mask Art ,designed and painted  masks for French Canadian goalie, Manon Rheaume, the only woman to ever play in nets in the NHL, including her Tampa Bay Lightning, Atlanta Knights, and a Team Canada mask, which is currently on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame, in Toronto.

As well as NHL and Farm Teams, Marlene’s work has been seen in many other levels of International Competition, including various World Cups and Olympic’s, including Lake Placid. Lillehammer, Nagano, Salt Lake City and Torino Olympics for teams from Canada, United States, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Japan, etc.

Off the ice Marlene’s Mask Art is seen in Major Movie Motion Pictures, including Disney’s “Mighty Duck Movies”, and the movie “Sudden Death”, including a mask worn by Jean-Claude Vandamme himself.

In the ancillary product line, Marlene has contributed with her designs replicated for such products as BAP and Pinnacle Mask Art Trading Card Series, McDonalds Restaurants, Pinnacle, EA Sports and Corrinthean Toys Mini and Micro Mini Mask programs, and in the Video Game Market with Sony Entertainment and EA Sports.

Sports Restaurant Chains such as ESPN/Disney “The Grill” in the United States, and “Sports Café” in Canada, United States, United Kingdom, Europe, Middle East, and South Africa are slso included in Marlene’s portfolio of Mask Art pieces.

In 2001, Marlene was honoured by the Canadian Government & National Capital Commision in Ottawa, recognizing her Artwork Contributions & Accomplishments, with other respected Canadians such as Celine Dion, Brian Adams, Rick Hansin, Terry Fox, Marc Garneau and others, for the Contribution and Impact these people have had in the World as Proud Canadians and Ambassadors of Canada, in their respective fields.

Marlene's accomplishments have been highlited in many media forums, including Hockey Night In Canada, CBC Sports, NHL Galla Awards, ESPN, CTV, Fox Sports, The Hockey News, Sun Media, Toronto Star, National Post, Montreal Gazette, Globe and Mail, Vancouver Province and other trade and newsmedia venues.

Marlene also has had a true commitment to local communities, involved in many programs and activities such as:

  • Sponsorship of the Brockville Braves Jr. A Hockey Club
  • Crime Stoppers – Calligraphy art for the Crime Stoppers “Certificates of Appreciation”
  • Stay in School Programs, speaking to children
  • Hockey Schools for boys and girls
